ITA has taken remarkable efforts towards improving the fire safety in traffic tunnels during the last 10 to 15 years. Especially worth mentioning in this regard are the activities of two ITA Working Groups dealing with general aspects of fire and life safety in underground facilities as well as the structural fire resistance of tunnel lining systems. The latter one is complementary to the operational fire safety aspects of traffic tunnels dealt with by a corresponding Working Group of PIARC – the World Road Association.
