Letter from the President

I last wrote  to you in late June following my visits to Croatia, Sao Paulo and San Francisco.I hope  that those of you who were fortunate to take a break these last 3 months have enjoyed time away with their families. The next few months will be busy times for ITA, not least because the WTC will be held in Agra in September--see ITA website for details. Over 1000 delegates are expected to attend. Our previous WTC was held in Prague in May of 2007 (16 months ago)so the ITA agenda will be full this year. I hope to see many of you there and to see your active participation in the...

Kazakhstan 53rd ITA Member Nation

The launching seminar of the Kazakhstan Tunnelling Association (KTA) took place in Astana on May the 15th. The seminar has been chaired by Baibol UTEPBAYEV, President of KTA. More than 80 persons representing companies and public services of Kazakhstan took part in the seminar.ITA has been invited to participate and was represented by its General Secretary, Claude Berenguier.The formal adhesion of Kazakhstan inside ITA through KTA has been done during the 34th ITA General Assembly in Agra. Kazakhstan is the 53rd ITA Member Nation.

Peru 54th ITA Member Nation

As a consequence of the last years' action of the Former President André Assis, Peru has applyed to become an ITA Member Nation. It will be represented by the Associacion Peruana de Tuneles y Obras Subterraneas -APTOS (Peruvian Tunnelling and Underground Works Association). 

The formal adhesion of Peru inside ITA through APTOS has been done during the 34th ITA General Assembly in Agra. Peru is the 54th ITA Member Nation.

ITACUS Press release

The Steering Board of the ITA Committee on Underground Space – ITACUS, met in Sao Paulo on 27 and 28 June 2008 on occasion of the 2nd Brazilian Tunnelling Conference 2008. During the meeting the work programme for the committee was finalised and approved by the Steering Board. The work programme will now be presented to the ITA General Assembly 2008 in Agra, India, for approval, making it possible for ITACUS to continue its already started activities.

Brazilian- Japanese exchange cooperation year

The Brazilian Government instituted the year of 2008 as the Brazilian and  Japanese Exchange Cooperation Year, when the Centennial of the Japanese  Immigration in Brazil is commemorated.  Therefore, during the June of 2008,  a series of commemorative activities were being programmed by the Japanese  and Brazilian Authorities and the Nikkey Community in Brazil.  Representatives of the Imperial Family of the Japan also appeared for the  festivities.

Congress and Symposium join 550 engineers from 22 countries in São Paulo

News from the Czech Tunnelling Association (CzTA) - August 2008

Meetings of the new CTuC (CzTA) Board: Meetings of the new board which took place on 24th January 2008 and 30th April 2008. At the beginning of the first meeting, the Board assessed the results of the previous term. Then they elected two vice-chairmen, namely Prof. Jiří Barták (the Czech Technical University in Prague) and Mr. Stanislav Sikora (VOKD a.s.). CPT Seminar on Tunnels and Underground Works in Portugal

TUCSS 2 day short course

TUCSS jointly with the Land Transport Academy (LTA) Academy organised a two-day short course on “Planning and Design of Tunnels” on 5th and 6th March 2008 at the Hotel Swissotel Merchant Court. Fifteen industry eminent experts have presented their lectures on various topics including planning, investigations, designs, risk assessment and management and regulatory requirements. It was well attended by slightly more than 100 participants from contractors, consultants, developers and authorities.

   

News from Sweden - ISTSS 2008

Training course „Sprayed concrete“ at Hagerbach Test Gallery

On demand of MC-Bauchemie and the Centre for Concrete Technologies in St. Petersburg, Russia, Hagerbach Test Gallery trained Russian contractors and authorities in production, application and testing of sprayed concrete.

News from Gibraltar

Morocco and Spain are working to finalise the studies for a railway tunnel under the Strait of Gibraltar. According to the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Angel Moratinos, the project will be presented to the European Union October the 13th. The goal of this meeting is to obtain a preliminary green light for a project which now estimated to 18 billion euros, more than 3 times the previous estimation of 5.4 billion.
