Sharm el Sheik, Novemver 2006: International Symposium on Utilization of Underground Space in Urban Areas

International Symposium on Utilization of Underground Space in Urban Areas

The Egyptian Tunneling Society (ETS) held its 5th International Symposium in Tunneling under title “Utilization of Underground Space in Urban Areas “ at Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, November 6-7, 2006. ITA Executive Council joined the Symposium and held its periodical EC meeting on November 4-5 2006 before the Symposium. There were 11 EC members who joined the Symposium and EC Meeting.
9 keynotes speakers have been presented in 2 main speakers sessions by:
Harvey Parker (ITA President) “Bold and Visionary Planning of Tunnels and Underground Space”
Harald Wagner (ITA Vice President) “Construction decisions: interaction between numerical analysis and measurement in Conventional Tunneling”
Fritz Grübl (ITA EC Member)”Use of subsurface”
Eivind Grøv (ITA EC Member) “The importance of rock stresses in design and construction of sub-surface openings”
Claude Berenguier (ITA Secretary)”Why go underground in urban areas”
E. Broch (ITA Past President) “Use of rock caverns in urban areas in Norway”
Alfred. Haack (ITA Past President) “Overview of European tunnel research and ITA committee on operational safety of underground facilities”
Pierre Duffaut (France) “Underground city-planning - A French born concept for sustainable cities of tomorrow”
F. El-Nahhas (Egypt) “Tunneling and supported deep excavations in the greater Cairo”

A special presentation was presented by M.E.Abdelsalam (Egypt) 'Underground works in Ancient Egypt

In the symposium, 36 papers were presented and discussed in 5 sessions. All papers were embodied in the symposium proceedings.

There were 165 participants : 7 delegates from France, 5 from Germany, 4 from Switzerland, 2 from Korea, 2 from U.K., Italy, Norway, Russia and Iraq, 1 from USA, Canada, Brazil, Austria Czech, and 130 from Egypt.

You can download hereafter papers and/or presentations (pdf files) when available.
