A workshop on “Safety in Tunnels and Underground Works” was held in Riyadh, The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on November 8 and 9, 2006. The event, held at the Intercontinental Hotel’s King Faisal Conference Hall, was co-sponsored by The Ministry of Transport and the International Tunnelling Association. The Chairman of the Organizing Committee was Eng. Abdullah Al-Mogbel, Deputy Minister of Transport for Roads.
His Excellency, Dr. Jubarah bin Eid Al-Suraisry, Minster of Transport presided over the Opening Ceremony and presented his welcoming remarks. Opening remarks were also delivered by His Excellency, Eng. Abdullah Al-Mogbel, Deputy Minister of Transport and ITA President, Dr. Harvey Parker.
The workshop was attended by more than 450 participants from 10 Arabic countries and 6 countries outside the Arabic world. Fifteen high quality papers related to the subjects were presented by national and international tunnel experts. In addition to the ITA President, 4 other ITA Executive Council Members participated in the workshop, including Secretary General, Mr. Claude Berenguier.
Saudi Binladin Group was the Prime Sponsor for the workshop. A comprehensive exhibition was held in conjunction with the workshop bringing valuable practical information regarding products, services, and materials to the participants. Logistical support for the workshop and exhibition was effectively provided by Ramtan.
