In the past 3 weeks l have met with the Japanese, Chinese and Hong Kong tunnelling industry.The tunnelling scene in China is by far the most encouraging ongoing tunnelling news that reflects the infrastructure stimulus initiatives that have been introduced by governments to combat the drop in market activity due to the financial crisis. Hong Kong too is experiencing big tunnelling activity along with Singapore in metros, water supply and sewerage schemes. President and Secretary general, together with Eivind Grov, Soren Eskesen, Bai Yun and Harald Wagner were invited to the China's 4th International Symposium on Tunnelling held in Shanghai on 28-29 October 2009. The symposium was mainly sponsored by CCES, the Chinese representative in ITA, and by the Shanghai authorities, including Shanghai Municipal Government, Shanghai Society of Civil Engineering (SSCE) and Shanghai Tunnelling Engineering Company (STEC, ITA member); it gathered around 500 participants.

The Finnish Tunnelling Association celebrated from 4 to 5 November in Helsinki, Finlandia Hall.

Vice President, In-Mo Lee, Secretary General, Claude Berenguier, and Executive Director, Olivier Vion, visited Indonesia end of September at the occasion of a "Seminar Underground tunnel" organized by MRT Jakarta.

President and Secretary General visited JTA, Japan ITA representative from 25 till 27 September.
During this visit a Symposium was organized at the attention of JTA members; a talk was given by the President (download text ; presentation) to the Japanese Business Community and the Secretary general informed about the new development concerning Training within ITA; 25 participants were present especially the new President N. Saudi National group of ITA co-organized with the Gulf Road Engineering Society (GRES) the second Gulf Transport Conference in Riyadh which gathered around 500 specialists from the 6 Gulf Countries and from Syria and Jordan. On September 16-18, took place in Ljubljana, the 9th conference on tunnel construction and underground structures. ITA was represented by Eivind Grov, Vice President. The results of the biggest research initiative on underground construction were presented recently at a two-day workshop and final event in an underground cultural facility Dom-im-Berg in Graz, Austria. The project lasted 4 years and involved 41 partners (clients, industry, SMEs, manufacturers, research institutions, Universities) from 11 countries of the European Union. The budget (financed 50% by the EC) was 26 Million Euros. (read more).
